Former Cleveland Browns punter wins workers' comp claim

Ohio football fans may be familiar with the case of Tom Tupa, a longtime NFL punter for such teams as the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State. Tupa recently won a contested workers' compensation claim in Maryland's highest court.

Study finds workplace injuries two times as likely for disabled

A recent study conducted by researchers in conjunction with Ohio State University compared the rates of injuries between disabled workers and those without disabilities. The study revealed that the rate of workplace injuries for disabled workers was six injuries for every 100 disabled workers as compared to only 2.3 injuries for every 100 non-disabled workers.

Ohio woman killed in tragic work-related accident

A 50-year-old woman who was a longtime employee of Glatfelter, a paper manufacturer, died in a work-related accident in Ohio. The accident happened last week in the facility's wood yard but additional details regarding how it occurred have not been released.

Workers' compensation fund examines prescription painkiller use

Our Columbus-area readers may be interested in some new figures that have been released by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, although the data may signal a disturbing trend. According to the recent report, approximately 20 percent of the total funds paid out of the state insurance fund for injured workers goes toward payment of prescription drugs. And almost 33 percent of those funds paid for narcotic painkillers in 2011.

Seeking medical care after a work-related injury

In addition to reporting the injury, seeking medical care after the injury is perhaps one of the most important things to do at the beginning of workers' compensation claim. Obtaining medical care creates documentation of the diagnosis and injury that was sustained. In many situations, the medical care provided just after the injury can help direct the injured worker to more specialized care or therapy if such treatment is deemed necessary. It is also the first opportunity for a medical expert to offer an opinion on whether there is cause and effect connection between the injury and the diagnosis.
