Study finds workplace injuries two times as likely for disabled

A recent study conducted by researchers in conjunction with Ohio State University compared the rates of injuries between disabled workers and those without disabilities. The study revealed that the rate of workplace injuries for disabled workers was six injuries for every 100 disabled workers as compared to only 2.3 injuries for every 100 non-disabled workers.

The study's author notes that the results mean that businesses must do a better job accommodating those with disabilities and institute more programs to teach disabled workers safety and health skills that could lead to the prevention of more work-related injuries. It is clear from this study that a safer working environment needs to be made for everyone in the workplace, especially those with disabilities.

Another interesting finding from the study is that the most common causes of workplace accidents were from falls and accidents involving transportation, regardless of whether the worker was disabled or not.

The procedures that must be followed after a workplace injury are the same regardless of whether an individual is disabled. It is very important to seek medical attention in order to receive adequate medical care promptly. All medical care related to the injuries suffered in the workplace accident will be paid for under the Ohio workers compensation system. By filing a workers' compensation claim, in addition to receiving medical benefits, an injured worker may also be entitled to receive compensation for lost wages. Injured employees are also entitled to receive additional benefits if they are temporarily or permanently disabled as a result of a workplace accident.
