OSHA cites Piqua industrial plant with 14 safety violations

Ohio residents may havee heard that Miami Valley Polishing, LLC, where stainless steel, aluminum and other metals are polished, was recently cited by OSHA for 14 safety violations. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration report, the Piqua plant continued to ignore previous OSHA citations aimed at lowering the incidence of workplace injuries, particularly in the area of workers' exposure to hazardous chemicals such as chromium.

Most egregiously, OSHA cited the plant for seven repeated violations that the plant had apparently failed to correct since the last inspection in July 2011. The fines for the violations were proposed at $57,144. In addition to the failure to provide adequate safety measures regarding hazardous chemicals, OSHA also cited the company for failing to administer a hearing testing program based on the workers' high levels of noise exposure on the job.

It is extremely important for any individual who has knowledge of a potentially hazardous condition at his or her workplace to alert the proper agencies so that an investigation can be conducted properly.

In addition, it is important to determine if the employer could have taken any precautions to prevent the injury from occurring. In this case, officials also cited this plant for several reasons, including "failing to...provide information on the use of respirators; lock out machinery during servicing; guard machines; and use compressed air below 30 pounds per square inch for cleaning."

Overexposure to dangerous levels of chemicals can lead to serious health consequences. If an individual becomes ill as a result of overexposure to chemicals in the workplace, the individual may be able to acquire medical care, expenses and other benefits through the Ohio workers' compensation system. However, whether or not an employer's negligence causes a workplace accident, an injured employee may file a workers' compensation claim to find out if they are eligible to receive benefits to pay for his or her medical care.
