Semi-truck strikes hydraulic lift, injures two workers

Most people have driven through construction zones at one time or another. They have seen the orange cones or barrels to mark closed lanes, reduced speed limit signs, and men and women at work on the roadway. Despite all the safety precautions taken to protect workers, job-related accidents still occur on an all too regular basis. Some of these accidents are caused by negligent drivers while others are caused by unsafe working conditions.

One of these accidents occurred recently on a busy Interstate. Workers were removing support beams from a bridge over the Interstate when a semi-truck struck a hydraulic lift, injuring two. One of the workers was knocked from the bucket and fell 13 feet to the road below. The other worker remained in the bucket, but both were taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition. The accident remains under investigation.

A worker injured on the job may have a difficult road ahead of him. Physical injuries can be extremely painful and long-lasting, making once beloved activities and everyday duties difficult. Emotional pain might drive the injured worker to feel depressed, scared, and angry. Financial harm can also occur. The worker may incur expensive medical bills and may be unable to work for an extended period of time. All these harms can compound to leave the worker feeling hopeless.

This is especially true when the victim's workers' compensation claim is denied. A denial can happen for any number of reasons, but the victim should not stop his fight there. Instead, the injured worker should seek a competent attorney who can argue for the benefits the worker deserves. The basis of an attorney's argument may be that unsafe working conditions existed and caused the accident, the accident occurred while the worker was operating within his scope of employment, and the injuries were not pre-existing to the accident.

If the attorney succeeds in obtaining workers' compensation for the victim, then certain losses may be recovered. Amongst these recoveries may be loss of wages, loss of future earning capacity, and medical expenses. Though he may be unable to work, a victim who receives workers' compensation can rest assured he retains a steady income while he focuses on his recovery.
