Ohio man ordered to repay workers' compensation benefits

Ohio has always been a state that prides itself on building things. Manufacturing has long been an important part of the state’s economy and identity, but unfortunately workers’ compensation disputes tend to go hand in hand with manufacturing and industrial activity.

While workers’ compensation exists to take care of those who are injured while performing the duties of their trade or employment, the news media often focuses on reports of the very few who either take advantage of the system or receive inappropriate benefits inadvertently.

This happened recently when a man was accused of submitting fraudulent wage statements to the state’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. The charge brought against him was a fifth-degree felony count of workers’ compensation fraud. Although the sentence was one year in prison, that time was suspended in favor of five years of community control. The man was also ordered to repay the benefits that he received, as well as court costs.

This case shows how seriously insurance companies as well as employers take workers’ compensation cases, and how they will seek to weed out swindlers and punish them. Making mistakes when seeking workers’ compensation benefits can lead to significant legal troubles.

That means that if you have a workers’ compensation claim or you believe you may want to file one, it may be important to consult with an attorney regarding your case. Because it is so important to file your claim properly, and in accordance with all regulations, you may benefit from legal assistance during this process.
