8 common construction worker accidents

The Centers for Disease Control and prevent reported that more than 9 percent of nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2009 were sustained by construction workers. That year, construction workers suffered 4.3 nonfatal injuries and illnesses per 100 workers.

A construction site contains a variety of ways for workers to get hurt. All of them can cause terrible injury, permanent disability, or death. Here are 8 common sources of construction injuries:

  • Falls. One of the most common types of construction accidents involve the victim falling from a height.
  • Falling objects. Heavy objects and materials can also fall from scaffolding, cranes or ladders and land on workers on the ground below.
  • Equipment accidents. The machinery used in construction can be hazardous if its operator is negligent or the equipment fails.
  • Backovers and crushed-betweens. Vehicles at the site can run over workers, or crush them into a wall.
  • Fires and explosions. Wiring, leaky pipes and flammable chemicals can lead to disaster.
  • Trench or building collapse. Workers often become trapped when a trench they are standing in caves in.
  • Repetitive motion injuries, heatstroke, etc. These types of injuries build up over time, but are usually avoidable if proper tools and procedures are used.

Responsible builders provide as safe of a work environment as they reasonably can, but construction work can be dangerous, and accidents happen. When they do, the victim could be out of commission for weeks or months. Workers' compensation can help pay their bills until they can return to the job.
