Worker crushed at race track construction site

Everyone in Ohio knows that racing cars is a dangerous sport. Incredibly high speeds and crowded tracks put drivers at great risk of wrecking and getting injured. One unfortunate construction worker was also just recently injured while working on a racetrack, according to news reports.

Late last month, a dirt packing machine at the construction site of a new racetrack rolled over and critically injured the operator, according to reports. The workplace accident so severely injured the man that the shock of it sent him into cardiac arrest.

The incident took place at the construction of a Formula-1 racetrack in Travis County, Texas, which was scheduled to open in November.

A spokesman for the track noted that this was the first accident at the construction site that resulted in injuries, and the spokesman emphasized a commitment to workplace safety. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating.

Construction work is continuing in other parts of the site, utilizing about 400 workers.

By federal law, OSHA has about six months to continue such investigations. After the investigation, the construction site's management company could be cited or fined for any safety violations.

While OSHA often investigates workplace accidents in order to reprimand negligence and improve workplace safety, victims are generally entitled to workers' compensation benefits whether or not negligence was involved in the accident.

Workers' compensation can provide compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages related to experiencing a workplace injury.
