Ohio woman suffers horrific workplace injury

Workplace accidents can occur in any setting, but when heavy machinery is involved the dangers increase exponentially.

Earlier this month, an employee of an engineering company in Norton, Ohio, suffered a horrific workplace injury when her ponytail became caught in a machine that cuts steel tubing. She was pulled into the machine face first and was trapped inside the machine for approximately 20 minutes.

Luckily, the victim's co-worker hit the safety stop button, but a lot of damage was already done. The machine managed to rip the scalp off the worker's head.

She was hospitalized for 17 days and underwent three skin graft surgeries.

If the woman files a workers' compensation claim, these medical expenses will likely be covered under the Ohio workers' compensation system. She could also receive workers' compensation benefits during the time she is unable to work.

Unfortunately, the woman has suffered some permanent injuries as a result of this workplace accident. She reportedly lost all of her hair and her eyebrows. These will not grow back. The accident has also apparently damaged many nerves in her scalp.

The Ohio workers' compensation system provides additional monetary benefits for injuries that cause a temporary or permanent disability. Although monetary compensation will not completely repair the loss caused by catastrophic workplace accidents, these benefits can certainly lessen the impact.

Although workers' compensation coverage is available regardless of whose fault an accident is, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration often performs investigations after accidents such as these to learn whether any preventable hazards existed.
