Ohio BWC will study workplace injuries

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has awarded the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation a grant with the goal of increasing workplace safety. This grant of $117, 000 will allow Ohio to be included in gathering statewide and nationwide statistics on workplace injuries and illnesses.

Part of the study involves a survey of approximately 4,000 Ohio employers requesting specific information regarding workplace injuries and how many days are missed from work by employees as a result of those injuries.

The study will be utilized to determine how and why job related accidents occur, in an effort to prevent them from occurring in the first place. The Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, which will publish the findings, currently includes data from 44 other states. The data that is collected is used by private and public sector employers to identify and correct safety hazards and identify trends surrounding workplace injuries and illnesses.

If an individual has knowledge of a potentially hazardous condition at his or her workplace he or she should alert the proper agencies so that an investigation can be conducted before a job-related accident occurs. It is the employer's burden to ensure that the workplace environment is a safe one.

Additionally, should a workplace accident occur, it is important to determine if any precautions could have been taken by the employer to prevent the injury. However, whether or not an employer's negligence causes a workplace accident, an injured employee may file a workers' compensation claim to receive lost wage benefits and to pay for his or her medical care and other related expenses while undergoing medical treatment.
