Survey shows which states have the most injured workers

A new study conducted by Allsup ranks states according to how many workers per one hundred workers are injured on the job. The study was based on data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and found that each year more than one million workers suffer from workplace injuries that require them to miss at least one day of work. The study also found that those working in amusement parks and arcades are most likely to be seriously injured, followed by those working in animal slaughtering and processing, with 3.2 and 3.1 injuries per 100 workers, respectively.

So, where does Ohio stack up? The answer is unclear as Ohio is one of only nine states where data is unavailable because the state does not participate in the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey. Fortunately, a new grant was recently given to the state to facilitate participation, yet, if Ohio is similar to its surrounding states, the injured workers number might be disappointing. Indianand Kentucky were both in the top five for workplace injuries, with Indiana ranking second. Hopefully statistics will show Ohio is safer for its workers.

Yet, even if a state ranks the safest, workplace injuries are sure to occur. When they do, a worker can be left unable to work and may have to struggle with a physical and emotional recovery. Such strenuous recoveries can put a strain on an injured worker and his family both emotionally and financially. Medical expenses, lost wages and rehabilitations costs can put a family in a stressful financial situation that can only make matters worse.

Fortunately, workers who have been injured on the job may be entitled to disability benefits or workers' compensation. An employer's insurance should provide these benefits when a claim is made, but all too often the claims are denied. When this happens to an injured worker, he should not sit idle. Instead, an attorney can aggressively fight for what he rightfully deserves. By proving the injury occurred as the result of an accident that occurred while within the scope of employment, an attorney may be able to help an injured worker get the money he needs to cover his medical expenses and lost wages.
