Ohio prison worker injured on the job when attacked by inmate

Many times on this blog we discuss workplace environments that seem safe, but actually pose hidden dangers. However, there are also workplaces that are inherently dangerous. Amongst these are those locations where law enforcement personnel work. Every day, these brave men and women risk their lives to protect our communities. When these individuals are injured, they should be provided the compensation they need to reach a full recovery.

One woman may need this help now after being injured on the job. The woman, who works as a staff member at a northwestern Ohio prison, was injured when she was attacked by an inmate. Reports indicate the injuries are not life threatening, but that does not mean the victim will not have a tough road ahead of her.

Individuals who are harmed in workplace accidents may face several types of harm. The victim may be physically disabled or impaired, leaving her bedridden in the hospital for days or even months. Sometimes the victim's injuries fail to fully heal. The victim may also suffer emotionally, becoming afraid of the job that led to her injuries. Additionally, the victim might suffer financial losses as a result of incurred medical bills and lost wages.

Workers' compensation should help provide an injured worker with the medical benefits, disability benefits and other compensation needed to reach a full recovery. Yet, insurance companies sometimes deny these claims, often arguing the injuries pre-existed the accident, the injury occurred outside the scope of employment, or the employee was herself negligent.

If a denial occurs, then the victim should seek legal advice. An Ohio workers' compensation attorney with experience handling job-related accidents can help assess the case to determine if challenging the denial is appropriate. If it is, then the attorney will work to prove the accident occurred while within the victim's scope of employment, and it led to the victim's injuries. Then, hopefully, the worker will be able to obtain the medical care needed to get back on her feet and return to work.
