Dayton police officer involved in I-75 construction zone crash

Ohio residents ranging from maintenance workers to police officers can find themselves in outdoor workplace environments, often near dangerous, busy roads. This is especially commonplace when construction is going on in an area. Those with such occupations can be particularly susceptible to suffering workplace injuries.

An example of this type of on-the-job injury occurred recently on I-75. A Dayton police officer was exiting a construction work zone on I-75 with  both lights and sirens active on his vehicle when his cruiser was struck by a semi-truck.

In this case, the officer did not seem to suffer any serious injuries, although he was taken to a hospital following the incident. It is thought that perhaps the truck driver who totaled the officer’s cruiser did not hear the officer's sirens or see the lights. This case is very concerning because it took place on a construction site, where drivers are supposed to take extra precautions.

A workplace accident can result in costly medical expenses and lost wages, as well property damage. Officials noted in this instance that the construction zone had passed safety requirements and was routinely monitored.

In this case, the officer was lucky to have not suffered serious or life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-truck that struck his cruiser was not cited for a violation, however he did fail to notice the police cars’ sirens, which could be considered as negligence in certain cases. Those who work in dangerous environments should understand their rights when it comes to on-the-job accidents.
