Officers at Ross Correctional Institution are Denied Workers Comp Benefits

Despite the obvious connection between the employees’ medical emergencies and their employment at the Ross Correctional Institution, state workers compensation refused to reward the workers benefits. Firefighters, EMT’s and law enforcement officers involved in similar incidents are all protected by workers compensation. If this is the case, why are Corrections Officers not covered by workers comp when they also put their lives at risk daily? State representative Rick Perales told WCMH, “They are really providing us that same service of safety and security and we need to provide the resources and benefits based on their job hazards to each of them in the same manner.” Perales is now currently drafting legislation aimed at changing the workers comp employee who service on the state’s correctional facilities. All workers deserve to be covered by workers comp, especially when they continuously put their lives at risk.
